Here’s our pick of what to go and see… Passions and Defeats William Cavendish, the last great cavalier Harley Gallery, to February 2010 - the third in a series of exhibitions focusing on members of the Cavendish family who owned Welbeck. Passions and Defeats explores the life of William Cavendish, 1st Duke of Newcastle (1593 - 1665). A key figure in the English Civil War he was also the leading authority on the art of training horses. Displays feature fine and decorative arts owned by William reflecting his passions: architecture, the arts, horses and also his connections to the Royal family. Celebrate the life and works of the writer, artist and poet at the fifth annual D.H. Lawrence Festival. Lawrence's work is explored through talks, plays and walks in his home town of Eastwood, Notts, which he once described as 'the country of my heart'. Authors John Harvey, Lynne Chapman and Nick Barratt from BBC's 'Who do you think you are?', will be giving lectures and hosting writing and illustration workshops for all ages. Finally the artists choice, where three artists, Maria La Ribot (Spain), Jonathan Burrows (UK) and Alain Buffard (France) have each been invited to curate an evening performances, means there’ll be something for everyone. GameCity explores videogames in new ways, uncovering the most interesting parts of their culture and inviting visitors to join in.
